The other way in
Install it by hand
Second Read is on the Chrome Web Store, which is the easier route. This page is the same build installed directly, for anyone on a locked-down machine or who would rather not go through the store.

- I
Unzip it
Double-click the downloaded file. You want the folder it produces, not the zip itself.
- II
Open your extensions page
Type chrome://extensions into the address bar and press enter. It cannot be reached from a link, so it has to be typed.
- III
Turn on Developer mode
A switch in the top right of that page. Chrome only accepts hand-installed extensions when it is on.
- IV
Click "Load unpacked"
Then choose the folder you unzipped. Not the zip, and not a folder containing it: the one with manifest.json inside.
- V
Capture something
Press Command Shift S on a Mac, or Ctrl Shift S on Windows, and drag a box around any text.
Worth knowing
Chrome will nag you. Every time it starts, it warns about extensions in developer mode. That warning is about how this was installed, not about what it does. It goes away once the store listing is live and you install from there.
It will not update itself. Hand-installed extensions do not auto-update, so come back here for a newer build, or wait for the store version.
Do not delete the unzipped folder. Chrome runs the extension from where you put it. Move it somewhere permanent before loading it, not your Downloads folder.
